Preamble

In Livonia's kindergarten classrooms, we do not correct the spill. We map it. This curriculum rejects the golden seam narrative—the idea that repair is the ultimate virtue—and replaces it with draft courage: the ability to begin without knowing the outcome.

The Twelve Steps

  1. Prep the Paper: Tape 9x12" cold-press to board. No priming. Let the tooth breathe.
  2. Flood the Surface: Pure water, no pigment. Watch the grain rise. Tell children: "This is the storm."
  3. Drop the First Pigment: Alizarin Crimson, undiluted. One drop. Watch it bloom. Do not touch the brush again.
  4. The Second Drop: Prussian Blue. Adjacent, not overlapping. Observe the boundary negotiation.
  5. Tilt the Board: Gravity becomes the teacher. The puddle moves. Ask: "Where did it go?"
  6. The Salt Test: Coarse sea salt sprinkled mid-dry. Wait 3 minutes. Brush off. Reveal the crater.
  7. The Alcohol Spray: Rubbing alcohol mist. Watch the repel. Explain: "Some forces cannot mix."
  8. The Mistake Log: Children label the bleed. Not "error," but "unexpected flow."
  9. The Second Wash: Overlay a new color on the dry chaos. The first draft becomes the underpainting.
  10. The Story Arc: Teacher narrates the journey from flood to final. No corrections allowed.
  11. The Gallery Walk: Mount all drafts. No favorites. Only variations.
  12. The Return: Bring the paper home. Frame the bleed.
